Tailored for SMB storage applications, Quanta's innovative MESOS CB220 features a highly available, fully redundant, and fault-tolerant Cluster-in-a-Box solution powered by Windows Storage Server 2012 Standard Edition and LSI Syncro CS solution.

Cluster-in-a-Box, High Availability and Reliability

MESOS CB220 is a 2U 2-node network storage appliance, featuring transparent failover via two redundant nodes in an active/active cluster enabled by a gigabit Ethernet interconnection and Windows Cluster Failover Manager. If one server node fails, the other one will seamlessly take over all I/O activities, keeping the system up and running without errors or data loss.

Windows Storage Server 2012 offers new enhancements, including Storage Spaces, ReFS (Resilient File System) and NTFS Online Corruption Repair, at the foundation of the storage stack with disk I/O and file system capabilities that can help protect you from drive failures, protect the data on those drives from corruption, and perform self-healing operations online if corruption does occur.

New SMB 3.0 supports node failover in a cluster and provides continuous availability for application storage.

The server for Network File System (NFS) can now dynamically respond to server problems by supporting the improved transparent failover capabilities in Windows Storage Server 2012.

MESOS CB220 with LSI Syncro CS solutions use two storage RAID controllers with two server nodes are designed to provide continuous application uptime at a fraction of the complexity of existing high availability solutions, further to provide a redundant and simplified server failover cluster function by sharing the storage in a single cluster-in-a-box form factor.

Shared infrastructure design provides remarkable energy/cooling efficiency

Each node is equipped with two Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2609, 32/64 GB of memory, and two Gb Ethernet ports plus a 10 Gb Ethernet option. Two server nodes share the same chassis, power supplies, and fan modules, which provides remarkable energy/cooling efficiency and infrastructure investment savings.

Compact shared storage design offers high density, simplified cable management and energy savings

Two server nodes also share the same in-chassis storage space. Compared to traditional clustered solution that requires external shared disk enclosure, numerous network cables, and complex system configurations, MESOS CB220 can save 22% of power consumption, provide double density, and greatly simply cable management in its already wired 2U chassis.

Data Deduplication provides significant storage savings

Windows Storage Server 2012's advanced ability to perform deduplication provides significant storage savings with 50-95% primary data reduction.

File-Based Server Application Storage with new SMB 3.0

A new version of SMB, Window's main remote file protocol, is introduced in Windows Storage Server 2012 to make sure file storage could meet or exceed the requirements commonly applied to block storage, without losing file storage's inherit benefits in ease of management and cost effectiveness. New capabilities include:

  • SMB Transparent Failover: Enables administrators to perform hardware or software maintenance of nodes in a clustered file server without interrupting server applications storing data on these file shares. Also, if a hardware or software failure occurs on a cluster node, this feature enables SMB clients to transparently reconnect to another cluster node without interrupting server applications that are storing data on these file shares.
  • SMB Multichannel: Provides multiple connections and network interfaces simultaneously to increase throughput and fault tolerance. In the event that one of the network adapters or cables fails, SMB client will continue to use the network uninterrupted, at a lower throughput.  
  • SMB Scale-Out: Taking advantage of Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) version 2, administrators can create file shares that provide simultaneous access to data files, with direct I/O, through all nodes in a file server cluster. The maximum file serving capacity for a given share is no longer limited by the capacity of a single cluster node, but rather the aggregate bandwidth across the cluster. Also, this active-active configuration balances the load across cluster nodes by moving file server clients without any service interruption.
  • VSS for SMB File Shares: VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) for SMB file shares extends the VSS infrastructure to perform application-consistent shadow copies of data stored on remote SMB file shares for backup and restore purposes.
  • SMB Performance Counters: Windows Storage Server 2012 includes server and client performance counters that allow administrators to easily look into the key metrics for file storage, including IOPs, latency, queue depth, and throughput.
  • Performance: SMB 3.0 optimizes performance for different kinds of workloads, covering both small and large I/O, and both sequential and random access.

Block-level access with iSCSI

MESOS CB220 also supports block-level access and functions as an iSCSI SAN via iSCSI software target, allowing it to share iSCSI LUNs over the network to heterogeneous application servers running iSCSI Initiator.

Simplified Server and Storage Management

Administrator can easily manage local server, multiple remote Windows servers on the network that can be located through Active Directory (AD), DNS, or an IP address, and a group of Windows servers that you would like to perform the same actions on, in Windows Storage Server 2012 Server Manager.

The Value SKU enables Storage Spaces, a feature in Windows Storage Server 2012, to create reliable storage pools without hardware RAID controller. The Performance SKU offers an LSI Syncro CS solution with improved performance, hardware RAID protection and flexible capacity management.
